Growing up in the 1990s Hip Hop music was one of the dominate influences on young people in the poor communities in the United States. There were many influential artists from Los Angeles, California and New York, New York. The style of of Hip Hop from the west coast was very distinct and different from the Hip Hop from the east coast. The west coast has beats that bumped and used a lot of bass. It was music you could cruise to or party to. The West Coast’s style was mainly based on the gangster lifestyle. Gangs were a major theme and influence on the west coast’s most popular artists/rappers. The east coast hip hop was more lyrical and had more break beats. The east coast did have an element of drug dealing and street life from the ghetto.
