The Amazon is a very adventurous place to visit. It is filled with a very diverse ecosystem that is like no other on earth. When you travel to the tri-border area near Leticia, Colombia/Tabatinga, Brazil/Santa Toda, Perû I would advise that you go on tours. I am not a big fan of tours and I prefer spontaneity but for this vacation destination tours are necessary.

Jungle Hike Tours 🇨🇴

You can try to go to the jungle alone but I would advise against it because you need someone experienced that knows the way so you don’t get lost. The jungle can be a confusing place and there are a lot of dangerous animals. The night hike is definitely a tour you want to take in a group with a tour guide. The jungle is pitch black and you can easily get lost. You also need the knowledge and experience of a tour guide (Guia) to teach you what you can do and not do in the jungle. For example there are a lot of giant tarantulas that come out at night and are on the ground and trees so they told us not to touch any trees because the tarantulas could strike fast and bite you. The day hikes are easier visually but the heat and humidity can make them challenging. You must also be prepared to wear boots that the tour agencies lend to you. They aren’t very comfortable but they do protect your feet and legs up to your knees from mosquitos and other insects that can bite you. When I went on the tour I went with Amazonas Extremo Tour Agency.

Canopy Tree Climbing Tour 🇨🇴

This is also a pretty fun activity to do when in Leticia, Colombia. It takes a lot of strength and guts to do this activity. If you are afraid of heights this may be something you may want to do to challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone. It will help you grow and overcome your fear of heights. They hook you up to safety cables so it is pretty safe. The tour we took had 2 guides and they were natives of the Amazon. The total time needed to do this activity is about 3 hours. Your arms will be tired after completing this tour so make sure you are prepared to be a little fatigued after this activity.

Monkey Island Tour 🇨🇴

This was my favorite tour during my stay on Leticia m, Colombia. I went with Amazona Extremo Tour Agency. This is a must do for anyone who loves to interact with animals in their natural habitat. The experience is amazing. The monkeys are very friendly. They will jump all over you but be careful with your stuff because they tend to take anything they can’t take off of you or out of your backpack. Take some fruit with you to share with the monkeys. Make sure you ask the tour guide which fruit you can give them ans which fruit you can’t. I took an orange and a tangerine and those were okay to give the monkeys. The tour guide also told everyone to not wear sunblock when interacting with the monkeys because the sunblock can make the monkey’s fur white. The tour guide also told us not to wear sunglasses because the monekys can see their reflection and think it was another monkey and will attack. This was a wonderful experience I would recommend everyone do while on the Amazon.

Tuk-Tuk ride to Tabatinga, Brazil 🇧🇷

It is always cool to check Brazil off on your list of places you want to travel to. When going to Tabatinga, Brazil be ready for a very different place culturally. When you cross over into Tabatinga, Brazil from Leticia, Colombia the time zone changes to one hour ahead. Your GPS on your phone will recognize your location and automatically you are an hour ahead. The language is also different. Brazilians speak Portuguese so if you don’t brush up on your Portuguese you may be confused. There isn’t a whole lot to do other than buy some affordable gifts, take some pictures of the scenery, and try their food. The Tabatinga Zoo was very small and can be done in less than an hour. The market places are filled with exotic fruit such as Copoazu and Camu Camu. They also have a chocolate museum near the border of Tabatinga and Leticia but everything there was over priced. I bought a lot of my food and gifts from the small micro fiendas and the flea markets. If you are a soda lover then you must try the. Brazilian National soda called “Baré”. I loved the flavor and wish we carried that drink in the United States. The other must try soda is called “Guarana”. I didn’t like that soda as much as I did Baré.

Boat Ride to Santa Rosa, Peru. 🇵🇪

You must go to Santa Rosa, Peru at least once while staying in Leticia, Colombia. In order to. get there you must take a short boat ride across the Amazon River. The boat ride was really cheap. You can pay in Colombian Pesos or Brazilian Reales. Most of the people who operate the boats do not accept Peruvian Soles. The boat ride is about 5–10 minutes to cross to the other side. The architecture in Santa Rosa is very different from Leticia, Colombia and Tabatinga, Brazil. While there you will want to stop and eat at a restaurant called Brisas del Amazonas. The food is delicious and worth experiencing authentic Peruvian ceviche. You must also try the National Soda of Peru called Inca Kola. It is delicious when it is cold on the hot humid days there. Taking a picture of the Tuk-Tuk is worth taking because they look different than the Tuk-Tuks in Leticia and Tabatinga.

Where I recommend buying Gifts

Hippylandia Store

This Store in my opinion is one of the best stores to get nice gifts for family and friends at an affordable price. When you are there ask some of the store owners where the store is. It is close to the port in Leticia, Colombia.
